A Day at Sea
Our first full day at sea is always a welcome respite and chance to sleep in a bit - well, Ed and I rarely sleep in but whoa - we slept until 9:30 am!! And we chatted with so many other folks who slept in as well. I guess the change in time zone finally caught up with us all and we made our adjustment.
After a late breakfast, Ed enjoyed a tour and more detailed explanation of the Bayeux Tapestry. The Viking Ships have a replica of this tapestry, in sections, on all the forward staircases of their cruise ships.
Betsy worked on a couple loads of wash with the launderette right down the hall from our stateroom, and chatted with a nice couple from Chicago - they were doing their wash as well. As I’ve said before, most everyone is so friendly and wanting to chat, it makes for a great way to pass the time and learn someone else's story and about their travels. We have found that we are just beginners when it comes to traveling. The people onboard these Viking ships have traveled extensively all over the world and have trips planned well into the future. We are in good company and they inspire us.
Later in the afternoon we enjoyed a lecture from one of the onboard speakers, a meteorologist from Britain. He spoke seriously and humorously on many of the old wives tales to do with predicting the weather (i.e. Red Sky at NIght, Shepherds delight - we know it as Sailor’s delight…). He had so many sayings that we’ve never heard about. But it was informative and humorous as only a meteorologist can be.
We had planned to have dinner with the couple we had first met upon boarding the ship - they are from Maine (previously California). It’s their first cruise. We enjoy their company and had a great dinner in The Restaurant.
We crossed the Arctic Circle this evening. They had a Blue Nose ceremony during the day today by the pool if you wanted to participate. From what I heard they filled the hot tub with ice and water - you had to take the plunge and then a shot of Aquavit - and if you did all this you would become a member of the “blue nose” society. We did not choose to participate.
And poof, our day at sea had ended - time for bed and to prepare for the next day’s excursions.
