Nafplio (or Nafplion), Greece - back on the mainland!

(the "p" is silent and can be pronounced with or without the "n" at the end)

This town was absolutely beautiful! Besides Santorini, I feel that this town made me feel like I was in Greece - the Greece we see in pictures with the crystal blue-green waters flanked by snow-capped mountains. Our beautiful weather returned and we so enjoyed this city.

We were tendered into this port by our ship's tenders. The view from the ship of the harbor was breathtaking.

Our walking tour was informative - not as good as previous ones OR maybe we were getting tired of all the history talk - it's possible. But the tour was brief and we learned that Nafplio is located on the Peloponnese peninsula and is a remarkably preserved city. It sits on the Bay of Argos, which is home to the small 15th century Bourtzi island fortress. The ancient site of Mycenae stands on a hillside near this city, although our tour did not include that visit. The Mycenaean civilization held sway over much of the Mediterranean between approximately 1500 and 1100 BC and was home to the mythological conqueror of Troy, King Agamemnon. So much history for us to revisit!!

Our tour even took us past the local Fire Department, which, if you know Ed, was very exciting for him! So we had to take a picture with one of the trucks!

After enjoying the tour and then the shops, we found an outside café to sit and relax, sharing a pizza along with prosecco for me and Mythos beer for Ed (although Tim now tells us that Mythos is the Bud Light of Greece - oh well).

We recognized and invited a couple to sit with us whom we had previously met on the ship. After more conversation (they were from CT), she searched her phone to see where exactly in NJ her cousin lived as she knew it was near the ocean. Turns out her cousin lives in Little Silver! So crazy - this six degrees of separation thing we all talk about.

The town was hosting a yacht show (huge catamarans and motor yachts lined the harbor) and, of course, our ship - The Viking Sea! All these boats only added to the scenery.
